What are private utilities?
Private utilities refer to the utility services not owned by public utility companies that run beyond the service meter. Public utilities are owned by water companies, electric companies, telecommunication providers, etc.
If you are a property owner, you likely have unmarked, underground private utility lines. Some examples of underground utilities that may be hidden on your property are:
- Sprinkler and irrigation lines
- Invisible pet fences
- Lights or signs on the property
- Buried storage tanks and lines, including fuel tanks and water discharge tanks
- Electrical lines going out to sheds or secondary buildings
- Sewer and septic tanks, systems, and piping
- Security cameras
- Automatic gates, parking kiosks
- Gas lines to BBQ or pool heaters
Doesn't Ting mark utilities?
Before any digging takes place, a utility marking service will mark out underground public utilities (water, gas, electric) with paint or locate flags in and near the public right-of-way. Utility service providers only own and have information about their public lines.
