Installation and Construction FAQ
Wondering how to get started with Ting Internet? Maybe you’ve already placed your order and picked an installation date and now you’re thinking… what happens next?
From the curious type to the plan-every-detail type, here’s how Ting Internet works from start to finish. No stress. No guesswork, just answers to all your questions.
Ordering and Scheduling
How do I know if Ting is available in my area?
It’s quick and easy to check if Ting is available at your home. Head to Ting.com and enter your address. We’ll let you know right away.
Not quite there yet? No worries. Sign up for the waitlist and we’ll give you a heads up when we’re on the way.
How do I place an order?
You can create your Ting order in just a few short steps (inlcuding scheduling your installation!).
When am I charged for my order?
You won't be charged for your order when you place it. Your billing cycle starts the day after your installation. This date becomes your billing date each month. Internet service is prepaid, meaning you’re automatically charged at the beginning of each new cycle.
How do I schedule my installation appointment?
You'll schedule your installation appointment when you place your order for Ting Internet.
If you've already ordered, you can log into your account to setup your installation appointment.
What if I need to reschedule my appointment?
We get it, life happens. You can reschedule your installation appointment right from your Ting account, and pick another time that works for you.
What is Whole Home Wifi?
Whole Home Wi‑Fi is an optional add‑on to your Ting Internet service that uses eero to create a mesh Wi-Fi system to extend coverage throughout your home.
Can I bring my own router?
Yes! As long as it meets the minimum compatibility requirements, you're good to go.
Do I need a modem?
If you’re switching from a non-fiber internet service, you can likely ditch your old modem.
Many providers use combo modem/router boxes (sometimes called gateways), but those won’t work with Ting. Instead, you’ll need a standard wireless router to connect to our fiber equipment, called an ONT.
Will I need to upgrade my devices?
In most cases, your old devices will keep working with Ting, thanks to backwards compatibility on Wi-Fi standards.
Construction and Installation
What should I expect ahead of installation?
Before your installation happens, our construction partners will do minor construction work outside of your home to prepare for the installation. You don't need to be home for this part!
I have private utilities, what do I need to do?
Have sprinklers, an invisible fence or other private utilites in your yard? You’ll want to mark private utilities before your installation appointment so everything goes smoothly.
Do I need to do anything on installation day?
To avoid delays, we recommend plugging your equipment in ahead of time. This allows us to activate your service once the outside work is completed.
What happens on the day of my appointment?
We'll create a plan to bury the fiber from the street to the side/front of your home. We'll handle all the work of digging, burying, and restoring your yard after completing construction to the best of our ability.
What happens if digging is required?
If we need to dig, you may see temporary paint markings in your yard to help avoid hitting public utility lines.
How long does outside work take?
Outdoor work can take up to 14 days. (Don't cancel your current internet just yet–we'll let you know when Ting is up and running)
Where is the fiber buried?
If your current utilities (like power and telephone) are delivered from poles in front or behind your house, your new fiber connection will follow a similar path.
Can I get Ting installed in the Winter?
Yes! If the ground is frozen however, we may need to use a temporary above-ground fiber line that is run along the side of your home. This is just until we can get back and bury it permanently when the weather allows.
How long does installation take?
From start to finish, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
What equipment is installed?
NID (Network Interface Device)
The NID is a small white or gray box installed on the outside of your home, usually between 36" and 60" high. It’s where the fiber enters your home. The fiber line runs from the ground, up the side of your house and into the NID.
ONT (Optical Network Terminal)
An ONT is installed inside your home. This is what connects Ting fiber to your router.
I won’t be home during the installation. What do I need to do?
We do need someone 18 or older available during the installation. If you can’t be there, a family member, friend or neighbor can stand in for you.
My pets are friendly, can they say hello?
As tempting as nose boops are, we’ll have to pass this time. For everyone’s safety, please keep pets secured during the appointment.
I have a fiber construction concern
You can submit a construction concern by emailing constructionexperience@ting.com. We’ll take it from there.
